How to prepare for your headshot?

Your headshot or branding portrait should present you as confident and approachable because you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Many people dislike the idea of having to pose for a photograph. We understand that and our job is to put you at ease.

Here are a few tips to help you feel prepared for your shoot:

  • The headshot is about “you” and how you want to be perceived. Your clothes should not draw the attention away from you. Avoid bold, distracting prints and patterns. At the end of the day you want to be remembered, not your outfit.
  • Solid muted colors work best for a shoot. Black, grey and white work well but don’t wear pure black & white together. It creates a lot of contrast. If you have a color that you feel looks great on you, bring it. One color I like to avoid is red due to its emotional impact.
  • Everybody wants to look their best in their headshot. Make sure your clothes are fitting but not too tight. Don’t let an ill-fitting suit or dress send the wrong message. Bring several options to the shoot for us to select from.
  • If you don’t wear a tie on your daily business, skip the tie. Look the way you want and dress to the formality of a business meeting in your industry. However, well-chosen accessories (tie, scarf, etc.) can help you stand out and can add a splash of color.
  • If you intend to wear jewelry and/or makeup, do what is comfortable for you. Go for minimal and conservative so that you don’t feel distracted. Stud earrings are a good choice and if you decide to wear a necklace pick something simple like a pearl or a short chain.
  • We want your skin to look the best and a little moisturizer goes a long way. Moisturizing your skin well the night before your session and in the morning of your appointment will make your skin look wonderful. Please do not apply any make-up before your session if you have hired a makeup artist for your appointment.
  • Make sure you’re well rested and relaxed for your personalized headshot session. As your photographer I will do everything in my power to make you look your best.
  • Bring a hairbrush, makeup and other personal beauty items in case you need to refresh your makeup or styling.
